BUYING GUIDE

Brushless drills are the new standard in cordless power tools. The current trend points to this technology as the future of power tools, and it's not hard to see why. Brushless drills operate much more efficiently than brushed cordless drill models, preventing overheating, which traditionally reduces the lifetime of a brushless-powered tool.

Here are our suggestions regarding what you need to know before deciding on your brushless drill model.

1. Price

You should choose the brushless drill that best matches your budget. A mid-range price range is an excellent point to start from. Standard model brushless drills are between $50 and $100.There are also higher-end brushless drills that go up to around $200 or even more. You will find lower prices on the second and third-hand markets, but you can also strike lucky with some eBay purchases.

2. Battery type

There are three standard battery options: NiCd, NiMH, and Li-ion. NiCd (Nickel Cadmium) batteries were prevalent in the past, but we don't recommend you use them today because of safety concerns. NiMH (Nickel Manganese) batteries are slightly better and more modern than NiCd types, but still, we would not use them for high-power tools, such as drills. On the other hand, Li-ion batteries can be found in a wide variety of sizes and configurations. They are the best option for cordless power tools you can get.

3. Chuck size

The chuck is the part of the brushless drill that houses your drill bits and lets you control their rotation by gripping them in place. Chuck sizes vary between 6mm and 13mm, but 8mm is an excellent average with an average price tag of around $50 to $60. If you want a larger chuck, you should consider paying extra; otherwise, the standard 8mm chuck will do just fine.

4. Torque

Speed and torque are often confused as the same thing, but that's not true. Torque is about the amount of force you can apply to a drill bit. It is measured in foot pounds (FPM). The higher the number, the stronger your Motor is. Smaller numbers mean less torque, which means less power required to rotate your bits and hence less heat generated from friction between bits and Motor.

FAQs

1. Do brushless drills come in the cord or cordless models?

Some even come with an accessory kit to drill up to 3/8 inch holes in drywall, but through metal studs and sheetrock walls (2x4s), it's best to use an impact driver.

Rigid only sells corded models, but Milwaukee sells both types of drills.

2. How fast does the Motor turn?

Usually between 17,000-25,000 rpm (rotations per minute)

3. Are brushless drills heavy?

Some are, especially the ones that come with a large battery pack.

4. Will I notice any difference between a brushless hammer drill and a brushed model?

Yes, you will. Brushless drills have exponentially more torque than their brushed counterparts. The brushless motors use permanent magnets instead of electromagnets to create the torque needed to drive the drill bit into concrete, brick, or masonry.

When you hold one of these in your hands, it feels like an unstoppable force is behind them, and they will turn just about any material you put in front of them without stalling out as they do with brushes that get hot and need time to cool down before they can start moving again.
